A Brazilian sweep? What we watched as Women’s Street

TOKYO — The women take a skateboarding stage at the Ariake Urban Sports Park on Monday, and the international competition could result in a Brazilian issue. It could also be dated, as one of the gold medal contenders was only 13 years old.

While the talent pool of 20 is deep, a podium sweep is a possibility. And such we saw on sunday, with Nyjah Huston Seventh on men’s street, the Olympics aren’t always about who’s the favourite.

But Brazil has three of the world’s top street skaters, an array of talent and enthusiasm, experience and youth, which is exactly what the Olympics hope skateboarding will bring.

Leticia Bufoni, 28, is one of the most famous skaters in the world and won her sixth X Games gold medal in California this month.

Pamela Rosa, 22, won the world title in 2019 and has a collection of other major event awards.

13-year-old Rayssa Leal may be the youngest gold medal winner in Summer Olympics history. (The youngest person to achieve this feat at the Winter Olympics is Korean sprint speed skater Kim Yun-Mi, who was 13 when she won the relay in 1994.)

Leal attracts a lot of attention for his youth, talent and cheerfulness. Instagram posts are known to go viral, like skating in a fairy costume a few years agoShared by Tony Hawk. He sent a message a few days ago. Self photo with Hawkis an example of how hard you work to stay true to skateboarding’s roots and honor its history.

In the communal world of skateboarding, Brazilians act like a real team, a piece of family, and Bufoni is seen to be her supportive older sister and role model. Whichever wins the gold – and one will probably win – the others will be there with full support.

But there are many athletes who could disrupt possible Brazilian dominance. Japan’s Aori Nishimura and Momiji Nishiya are among the most likely and may have been inspired by them. In the United States, Alana Smith, Mariah Duran and Alexis Sablon34 years old living in Brooklyn. Sabone once dominated street competitions, winning the X Games and other major competitions for several years. As a pioneer of the sport, he’s watched his inspirations put him on the leaderboards, but perhaps one more important performance remains.

This is the debut of skateboarding at the Olympics and there are two different disciplines: street and park. Today’s activity, the street, is a playground of stairs, railings, and short ramps intended to simulate something like a schoolyard or office park. There are no forced movements. Athletes will do two 45-second runs and five singles, each rated on a 10-point scale.

The best four scores will be added together. A perfect score would be 40.

No one gets full points. But you can expect a Brazilian or three to converge.
