American Airlines and JetBlue Face Antitrust Litigation Via Alliance

The Justice Department filed an antitrust suit against American Airlines and JetBlue on Tuesday, saying a growing alliance between the two airlines has created a “de facto merger” in the New York and Boston markets, reducing competition and hurting consumers.

The lawsuit said the arrangement between airlines has reduced incentives to compete in the Northeast and elsewhere, “which will result in hundreds of millions of dollars in losses to air travelers across the country through higher fares and reduced options.”

The Justice Department said attorneys general in six states and the District of Columbia were involved in the action.

“This comprehensive partnership represents an unprecedented and de facto merger between local airlines,” the ministry said.

The airlines denied the accusations. American, the alliance “already more options and better service for customers.” JetBlue said that through the partnership, the two airlines “create a true third competitor to Delta and United” in the New York market.
