Anne Rice’s Latest Interview: ‘I’m Known to be Passionate’


Do you distinguish between “commercial” and “literary” fiction? Where is that line for you?

I do not, and I believe that the great novelists of our time have made the ram-head distinction by embarking on works of enormous grandeur and scope.

How do you organize your books?

I am blessed to have a large library at my home here in the Coachella Valley, and I have a devoted and loving staff that helps me nonstop as well as rearranging its sections as needed. Where I live in New Orleans and in the Garden District or St. It’s not like when I kept cavernous book rooms in my homes in Elizabeth’s building. I had to give away a lot of books to get my library to its current size. I sometimes sell them through Powell’s in Portland, Ore. The fact that so many have handwritten in the margins of my notes appeals to some buyers.

What book might people be surprised to find on your shelves?

I’m not sure it’s a specific book, but I think some might be surprised by the sheer volume of science writing I have. When you invent alternate worlds and supernatural cosmologies, it can be incredibly inspiring to read how little we still know about the underlying fabric of the universe.

You’re throwing a literary dinner party. Which three writers, dead or alive, would you invite?

Tolstoy and Dickens, no doubt. And perhaps my late husband, Stan, who was a brilliant poet and painter. I really miss her. We were married for over 40 years before she died of a brain tumor in 2002.

What books are you ashamed of not reading yet?

I always try to catch the books of my talented loved ones. My clever son, Christopher Rice, has a lot of great thrillers and will spawn a few gay romances next year. And my hilarious best friend Eric Shaw Quinn has the mystery series “Murder Summer”. He is our family’s beloved storyteller. Christopher and Eric also produce great podcasts together. If you come from a family of writers and artists, it can be difficult to follow their work closely and not interfere with their processes with your feedback and responses. I have been known to be passionate in my reactions to things.
