Manager Aaron Boone said the first goalkeeper, Anthony Rizzo, taken by the Yankees on the deadline, tested positive for the coronavirus and was placed on the Covid-19 casualty list by the team on Sunday.
Rizzo, who turned 32 on Sunday, got off to a solid start with the team, scoring three points in nine games, but becoming the organization’s latest member to test positive for the virus. The team had two major virus outbreaks and a few other positives.
Boone said Rizzo, a cancer survivor, was mildly symptomatic, describing him as “painful,” but otherwise fine. Boone said he hopes Rizzo will be missed after his hot start for the team and can return “earlier, not late”.
“Obviously it’s been terrific for us in every way,” said Boone. “I just spoke to him, he’s doing well. He’s got some symptoms, but he’s okay, but he’s obviously a little depressed.”
While most of the Yankees’ positive tests were the so-called breakthrough cases in which a person tested positive despite being fully vaccinated, Rizzo’s vaccination status was uncertain. He told reporters he hadn’t been vaccinated yet when he was a member of the Chicago Cubs in June, and said he was “taking a little more time to see the data” in what he described as a “difficult decision”.
Other teams have dealt with coronavirus outbreaks this season, including the Washington Nationals, who at one point briefly lost nearly half of their active roster, but the Yankees have been hit particularly hard by a long list of positives that include stars like Gerrit Cole. Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, and now Rizzo.
“You have to walk,” Boone said of the team’s long list of positives.
Luke Voit, who led the majors in home runs last season but struggled after knee surgery this season, was removed from the injury list on Sunday and was named to the starting squad to replace Rizzo in Sunday’s game against the Seattle Mariners.
