Ashley Barty Eliminated in Round 1 of the Olympic Tennis Tournament

Australian Ashleigh Barty is out of the Olympic singles tennis tournament.

Just two weeks after winning her first title at Wimbledon, #1 Barty fell in straight sets to Spaniard Sara Sorribes Tormo 6-4, 6-3.

Under a scorching sun combined with high humidity and temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, Barty never found his rhythm against the 24-year-old Spaniard. Barty recorded two set points in the first set and two match points while serving 3-5 in the second set. But upon Sorribes Tormo’s third chance, Barty netted a backhand volley, a final mistake in a 94-minute match filled with them.

Barty is number 1 in the world and a favorite of all the tournaments he enters, but women’s tennis is a competition open to everyone these days. She has often mentioned that there is so much depth in the women’s round that any player can be pushed out of the first game of any tournament.
