Barkevious Mingo, an eight-year NFL veteran, was arrested Thursday night in Arlington, Texas, and charged with a minor, felony charge of impropriety involving sexual contact.

On the advice of his lawyer, Mingo surrendered to the police and was released after paying a $25,000 bail. Police did not provide any additional information due to the age of the victim and the nature of the claim, which is said to have taken place in 2019.

Mingo’s lawyer Lukas Garcia clarifies the allegations “Totally unfounded,” he adds, “Mingo is the victim of a false allegation and we believe it was motivated by money or some other ulterior motive. We are confident that my client will be fully acquitted when the truth comes out.”

On Saturday night, the Falcons said they were aware of the allegations against Mingo and were gathering more information about the incident. A few hours later, the team announced it was releasing Mingo, but did not specify what triggered the decision.

The alleged incident, according to the arrest warrant, took place on the weekend of July 4, 2019, when Mingo was said to have invited a young family member and boyfriend, another teenager, to visit the Six Flags Over Texas amusement park in Arlington and K1. On the night of July 4, the boys returned to a local hotel where Mingo was staying. The warrant states that Mingo had sexual intercourse with the boy while he was asleep. Mingo then became more aggressive, trying to remove the boy’s underwear and have sex with him.

The boy’s mother filed a police complaint in January 2021, and the case was handed over to a detective from the Arlington Police Department’s Child Crimes Unit. Police received a search warrant in February 2021 and Nike sales records from July 4, 2019.

According to the search warrant application, police requested evidence to corroborate the victim’s statements: [the detective] … that buying gifts for children is a known ‘looking’ behavior in child sexual abuse cases.”

Mingo had signed a one-year deal With the Falcons in March. Mingo, who was selected sixth overall by the Cleveland Browns in 2013, also played with the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, Houston Texans and Chicago Bears.
