Baryshnikov Art Center to Return to Live Performance in Spring

This Baryshnikov Art Center After two years of online programming, she will be returning to in-person performances this spring.

The season features eight dance and music performances, three of which are presented virtually. Streamed performances are part of the centre’s commissioning program, which begins in fall 2020 as a way to maintain the organization and encourage artists to continue creating during the pandemic.

Cora Cahan, president and CEO of the centre, said the delay to the return to live performances was due to the long-planned replacement of the building’s heating, ventilation and cooling systems during the pandemic.

“We’re going very slowly and carefully here because for the first time in such a long time we’re going back to seeing viewers on the site,” Cahan said. “We are excited to be planning live performances step by step with our commissioning program, which has been so vibrant and dynamic since we started almost two years ago.”

The season will open with two virtual presentations: “Open Practice” on the creative process of high-wire artist Philippe Petit (February 7-21); and Toronto choreographer Peggy Baker’s film and sound installation “body as a word” inspired by Simone de Beauvoir’s “The Second Sex” (February 28-March 14).

The first live performances are the music evenings of Chromic Duo (March 14-15), genre-fluid musicians using prepared piano, toy piano and synthesizer; violinist and producer Johnny Gandelsmanpresenting the New York premiere of the “This Is America” project (March 16-17); and Andy Akiho (April 7-8), who will have the New York premiere of “Seven Pillars,” an evening piece for percussion.

Dance programming includes performances by artists. Ashwini Ramaswamy (April 13-15), “Let the Crows Come” deconstructs the Bharatanatyam form, and the world premiere of Donna Uchizono’s “Wings of Iron” (May 18-21). Both were originally scheduled for the center’s 2020 spring season. A new dance movie by Omar Román De Jesús will be screened virtually (April 25-May 9).
