Best Albums of 2021? Let’s discuss.

Creators Olivia Rodrigo and Tyler have released the only albums to appear on three pop music critics’ 2021 year-end lists for The New York Times. Beyond that, there was a variety of awards: Memphis rap, Colombian electronic folk, British spazz-rock, Atlanta soul, Georgia country-rap, Chicago jazz abstraction, California Technicolor rock, and Adele.

On this week’s Popcast is a roundtable of critics about the year on the albums, with conversations about Rodrigo and Tyler, as well as Lana Del Rey, Playboi Carti, Adele, Mdou Moctar, Snail Mail, Remi Wolf, Moneybagg Yo, Bomba Estéreo, Black Midi, PinkPantheress and much more.

Guests:

  • Jon Pareles, chief pop music critic for The New York Times

  • Lindsay Zoladz, writing about pop music for The New York Times and others
