“The unvaccinated are starting to be discriminated against,” she said as she ate a salad outside of Fairfax Whole Foods. “When you start forcing people to put something on their body, people get uncomfortable with limiting their personal choices and freedoms.”
Some Republican strategists say Mr Biden’s push will only spur his voters to dig their heels and make them even more resistant to the vaccine.
“Health-wise, the right thing to do is to voluntarily vaccinate more people,” said consultant Brad Todd, whose clients include Josh Hawley of Missouri and Rick Scott of Florida. “The country’s right wants to make its own decisions and will do a lot to prove it.”
But Democrats believe that powers are necessary to slow the spread of the pandemic and are also good policies. They argue that how Mr Biden currently handles the pandemic will set the tone for the midterm elections that many party strategists believe will be won or lost based on how Americans feel about the virus’s lasting impact on their pocketbooks, schools and businesses.
Democrats also think it’s a political advantage to run up against Republican governors who reject public health measures like masking and vaccine mandates – as much as they tried to portray Republicans as excessive and unreasonable during the Trump administration and walked away with White’s control of the 2020 election. House and Congress.
“Let’s see,” said Mr Biden on Friday, when asked about Republican threats to sue his administration over their terms of office. “I am particularly disappointed that some Republican governors are so audacious about the health of these children – so boldly for the health of their communities.”
For some voters, Mr. Biden is simply channeling their own anger.
“I spent the first year of Covid fearing that we would kill my father. “I am afraid I will harm my children now that they are fully vaccinated,” said Ravi Grivois-Shah, a family doctor and school board member in Tucson, Arizona, who lives with his 74-year-old father, and three children. “I’m tired of being afraid. I’m tired of having to relive this.”
