Brazil beat Mexico 4-2 on penalties to advance to the Olympic men’s soccer final after a semi-final full of 10 yellow cards but goalless fouls.
Dani Alves, Gabriel Martinelli, Bruno Guimaraes and Reinier exchanged their shots on shots for Brazil after they watched their goalkeeper Santos intercept Mexico’s first penalty and then watch their second attempt hit the post and rebound.
Carlos Rodriguez kept Mexico alive with Mexico’s third kick, but Reinier sped up to finish minutes later and slid his shot past goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa.
The semi-final at Ibaraki Kashima Stadium was the rematch of the 2012 Olympic final and featured the final two men’s soccer champions. Mexico beat Brazil at Wembley in 2012, and Brazil won their first home men’s title in 2016.
Brazil will face the winner of the second semi-final between Tuesday’s tournament favorite Spain and host Japan in the gold medal match in Yokohama on Saturday.
