British Columbia Declares State of Emergency as Wildfires Rage


Officials said a state of emergency was declared by the British Columbia government on Tuesday after wildfires in the region ordered dozens of evacuation orders.

“I have received word that we will be facing very difficult weather conditions for a few days inside,” Mr Farnworth said in a statement. “This declaration will address a potential mass evacuation scenario and provide our government with the means to secure the necessary shelters to house our citizens, if needed.”

The expanded weather forecast called for continued hot and dry conditions along with increased wind activity in Central and Southeast British Columbia, according to the statement. Most of the state was under high or extreme risk starting forest fires.
