In the 100m butterfly, Canadian Margaret MacNeil swam 55.59, defeating China’s Yufei Zhang and Australia’s Emma McKeon.

18-year-old American Torri Huske missed the pace of the swimming youth movement in the USA and missed the bronze medal by one hundredth of a second.

Huske led the swimmers group on the comeback, but his pace slowed in the final quarter of the race as MacNeil pressed from lane 7 and touched first for a surprise win. This was MacNeil’s first individual Olympic medal and his second at the Tokyo Games. He helped Canada win a silver medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay on Sunday.

The top-ranked swimmer at the event, Zhang, finished with 55.64 and McKeon finished with 55.72.
