Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland Win 400m Gold and Silver

After a medal-free opening day, the United States won two medals in the first event of the day on Sunday.

Chase Kalisz and Jay Litherland went 1-2 in the 400m individual medley.

Kalisz’s time to win was 4 minutes 9.42 seconds. He won a silver medal at this event held in Rio in 2016. He will also compete in the 200 meters individual medley at the Games.

The Americans benefited from the event’s favourite, Japanese Daiya Seto, being eliminated in the qualifiers the night before. He finished a staggering ninth with the eliminations of the top eight swimmers and missed the final.

Shortly after, Kieran Smith took the bronze medal in the 400m freestyle, increasing the number of medals to three.

Saturday went without a medal for the Americans; no athlete has finished higher than sixth in any competition.
