March is famous for playing big games in college basketball. But rarely has a game been as exciting as Chattanooga’s game Monday night in Asheville, NC against Furman.
To think:
one. It was a hit over 30 yards. Senior guard David Jean-Baptiste scored 3 points while being protected by two players and a few steps away from a third opponent. The shot quivered.
2nd. He was working overtime. Furman had hit 3-pointers to extend the game at the end of the regulation.
3. Nobody called the timeout. Furman’s Mike Bothwell shot with four seconds to play in the OT, but Chattanooga’s Coach Lamont Paris didn’t stop. So the drama continued uninterrupted by the teams standing in circles or the TV commercials.
4. Time was running out. Baptiste’s kick left his hands with roughly half a second left.
5. It was make or break. Chattanooga was two points behind. The shot wasn’t to tie the game, it was to win. And if he had missed, Chattanooga would have lost.
6. was to make the NCAA tournament. Shooting came in the Southern Conference tournament final. The winner of the game, the tournament champion, qualifies for the NCAA tournament. But the second one will definitely not happen.
7. Next was the date. Chattanooga had only competed three times this century, so qualifying was important. But poor Furman has waited on the NCAA dock since 1980. When their players fell on the court, students, alumni, fans, and former players in places like Greenville, SC had to collapse; Atlanta, Charlotte and wherever ancient Paladins lived.
Chattanooga will likely finish 13th in the NCAA tournament and the Moccasins will be pretty unsuccessful in the first round. No matter how their season went, they’ve already won a game that was nominated for the end of the year.
