City Center Announces 2021-2022 Season


New York City Center will continue with live, face-to-face performances in October with one of its signature events, the Fall for Dance Festival. The dance show will kick off the theater’s 2021-2022 season and will also be a Twyla Tharp birthday celebration, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater’s annual holiday season engagement, and two new dance lines.

City Center president and CEO Arlene Shuler said of the challenging season: “As a New York institution, we really wanted to reaffirm our commitment to New York audiences and New York artists.

“It’s a huge opportunity for artists,” added Stanford Makishi, vice president and artistic director of dance programs. “The people I’ve spoken to for the past 16 months are really dying to not only get back on stage, but actually engage with the audience.”

Downtown announced on Tuesday four commissions for this year’s Fall for Dance. Ayodele Cassel, Lar Lubovitch and Justin Peck will create new pieces to sprinkle throughout the festival’s five programmes; and Verdon Fosse Legacy, an organization dedicated to preserving the work of Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon, will reconstruct the three dances for the festival. The full lineup and schedule will be announced in early September.

In November, Twyla Tharp will celebrate her 80th birthday with two world premieres, as well as a program featuring signature works, “Twyla Now.” A number of stars, including Sara Mearns and Robert Fairchild, will perform, supported by a troupe of young dancers.

City Center’s new dance program will begin in 2022. Tiler Peck, A principal at New York City Ballet will open Centers at Artists, which gives successful dancers the opportunity to create a program; Peck’s show on March 3-6 will feature works by William Forsythe, Alonzo King, and others. From March 24 to April 10, the City Center Dance Festival, the spring equivalent of Fall for Dance, will continue. It will showcase many New York companies including Martha Graham Dance Company, Harlem Dance Theater and Paul Taylor Dance Company.

Encores! The series, which revives rarely produced Broadway musicals, will also return in 2022. Three shows, “The Tap Dance Kid” (February 2-6), “The Life” (March 16-20), and “Into the Woods” (May 4-15), were announced last year. Upcoming Encores! The season will be the first under artistic leadership Lear deBessonet, It was announced as the successor to Jack Viertel in 2019.
