CNN fired three employees who entered the office unvaccinated.

CNN said on Thursday it was laying off three of its employees for violating coronavirus safety protocols by going to the office unvaccinated; this is one of the first known instances of a large American company firing workers for ignoring the vaccination mission at work.

CNN has said its employees must be vaccinated against the virus so they can return to their American offices this year. The network relies on an honor system rather than asking for proof of vaccination status.

“Last week, we heard about three unvaccinated employees coming into the office. CNN chief Jeff Zucker wrote in an internal memo to The New York Times on Thursday. “Let me be clear – we have a zero tolerance policy on this.”

Mr. Zucker did not say where the employees worked, what positions they held, or how they violated their vaccine mandate. CNN declined to comment beyond its memo.

“We expect showing proof of vaccination in the coming weeks to become a formal part of the network’s process of providing access to workplaces,” added Mr Zucker.

Many large companies, including Facebook and Google, said they would ask their employees to get vaccinated against the virus to return to the office. Some companies, including The Washington Post, have gone even further by making vaccination more a condition of employment.

But few companies have fully defined what consequences will arise for employees violating vaccine requirements.

In his memo on Thursday, Mr. Zucker announced that CNN was delaying the official September 7 return for American employees to the office. CNN did not set a new date, but Mr. Zucker said in October “it seems reasonable at this point”. He wrote that “just over a third” of CNN’s American newsroom employees now regularly work in the office.
