England Wins the Mixed Medley Relay, a New Olympic Swimming Event

England won the medley medley relay in a time of 3:37:58, setting a world record for which the event was held for the first time at the Olympics. China took the silver and Australia the bronze, followed by Italy and the USA.

The medley was the final final of the session and one of the craziest and most strategic of the match, in which the teams swam every stroke, back, chest, butterfly and free 100m. Each team had two men and two women, but each country decided the order in which they swam.

The American team of Regan Smith, Andrew Wilson, Tom Shields and Abby Weitzeil took the second fastest qualifying round, well behind Britain, which set an Olympic record of 3:38.75.

However, not all top swimmers in each discipline took part in the competition – Caeleb Dressel, for example, did not – because they were resting for other events. This helps explain why Australia didn’t make it to the final.
