Evans Chebet Wins Boston Marathon Men’s Race

Kenyan Evans Chebet made his mark as a major marathon powerhouse with a decisive victory of 2 hours 6 minutes 51 seconds in the men’s race in Boston on Monday.

Chebet had 26 miles in Buenos Aires in 2019 and some quick victories at Valencia in 2020, but this was his first win in a major marathon.

The leading men’s group remained uncharacteristically large for 20 miles. But Chebet finally stepped on the gas, running Mile 22 in 4:27 and sprinting away from a 15-man pack for a 30-second victory.

Behind Chebet were the last two Boston winners. The 2019 champion Lawrence Cherono was second, and the 2021 defending champion Benson Kipruto was third. (The race was not held in 2020.) It was a 1-2-3 sweep for the Kenyan runners.

Chebet entered Boston in 2018 but crashed in torrential rain. He found the conditions much more favorable on Monday.
