Few US Health Workers Risked Shooting as Vaccine Mandated Biting

Deadlines for healthcare workers to get their coronavirus vaccines are either past or fast approaching, with only a handful of these workers in the United States putting their jobs at risk by failing to comply.

The consequences that employers warn are coming true.

UCHealth System in Colorado laid off 119 jobs this week. California-based Kaiser Permanente has suspended more than 2,200 employees. And 400 workers from the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit resigned rather than be vaccinated.

On Friday, UCHealth, a nonprofit system serving the Rocky Mountain area, sent the last of several email reminders to 119 employees — 0.5 percent of its workforce — who had not received vaccination, medical or religious exemptions. They were already removed from their weekend schedule and were informed this week that they were terminated.

“We would definitely want 100 percent compliance,” Dan Weaver, vice president of communications, said in an interview Wednesday. He said employees who were laid off were “encouraged” to reapply for their positions if they were vaccinated.

Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health plans, announced the vaccine requirement on August 2, with 78 percent of its workforce already vaccinated. A spokesperson said this week that the level has risen more than 92 percent.

Still, around 1 percent of Kaiser’s workforce across the country – about 2,200 workers – were put on unpaid administrative leave for not meeting the requirement, the spokesperson said. They have until 1 December to be vaccinated before they can return to work.

The Henry Ford Health System required its employees to comply with the vaccination requirement by last Friday. The system said Tuesday that 99 percent of its 33,000 employees are fully vaccinated, will soon receive their second dose or receive a medical or religious exemption.

Officials said nearly 400 employees had resigned due to the condition, but new hires had already made up for the loss.

Bob Riney, chief operating officer and head of healthcare operations at Henry Ford, said people who leave the company can reapply once they’ve been vaccinated.

“We are doing everything we can to keep these doors open,” Mr Riney told reporters. “Whatever their choice, we wish them the best and appreciate their years of service to our community and organization.”

Northwell Health, New York State’s largest healthcare provider, said monday He said 1,400 employees – less than 2 percent of his staff – refused to be vaccinated against the coronavirus and were forced to quit their jobs.

President Biden announced A mission that requires workers in nearly every hospital and healthcare system in the country to be vaccinated or tested weekly for the coronavirus on September 9.
