First Issue of Captain America Comics Sold for $3.1M

Barry Sandoval, vice president of Heritage Auctions, said in an interview late Thursday that the sales were driven by a resurgence of interest in superheroes, which can be attributed to blockbuster movies and the Covid-19 pandemic, which has fueled the desire for collectibles. In February 2010, Heritage sold its first comic for more than $1 million, prompting Batman’s first movie, Detective Comics No. He remembers the excitement of the 27 selling a copy.

“The Covid-19 era has led to a general explosion in collectibles,” said Mr Sandoval. “It’s part of the job. Some of the people, with each passing year, feel better at what is the high level of scarcity of these things. Thirty years ago one might have been a little more reluctant because you didn’t know how many more beautiful copies were out there.”

Mr Sandoval said the films did no harm. In a little over a decade, three popular additions have been made to the Captain America film franchise: “Captain America: The First Avenger” in 2011; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” in 2014; and “Captain America: Civil War” in 2016. The movies have grossed more than $2 billion. According to IMDb.

“Even if you buy something because you absolutely love it, you’re always a little more comfortable if you just think, ‘Oh, okay – if I had to get rid of it,’ without thinking about resale, investment or anything like that. I can get my money back or make some money out of it,” said Mr. Sandoval, “The fact that Captain America has been in so many movies lately, I think, gives people a better comfort.”

The copy sold on Thursday also had many advantages. Mr Sandoval said it came from a respected collection known as the San Francisco Pedigree Collection and is in near mint condition. He also said that the original Captain America issue holds a special place in the hearts of comic book enthusiasts.
