The Giants (4-12) extended their losing streak to five games after being defeated by the Chicago Bears (6-10) 29-3. Quarterback Mike Glennon was sacked four times on Sunday by Bears linebacker Robert Quinn, who once set the Chicago franchise’s single-season record (18).

Things are dark in Chicago. The Bears are one of the worst teams in the NFL. Coach Matt Nagy will be fired along with almost everyone else in the organization. Rookie quarterback Justin Fields was off the field with an ankle injury, so instead of kicking off the new year with the 22-year-old franchise cornerstone on Sunday afternoon, fans at Soldier Field had to settle for his right arm and red hair. 34-year-old backup Andy Dalton.

Those Bears and Dalton split the Giants in half and it was over in less than half the first quarter. Mike Glennon, the giants’ right-armed, red-haired backup (poor man’s Dalton), made his second opening turnover seven minutes later. Dalton and the Bears immediately made the score 14-0.

Chicago finished the first half leading 22-3, then 29-3 and then darkness.

Glennon has now lost 10 straight starts stretching back to September 2017, which is almost five years. things are bleak Chicago? Glennon could start again for the Giants next week. If he does, the Giants will end the season as the most unwatchable team in the NFL. Mazel tov!

It’s the season of perverse incentives that always comes right after Christmas in the NFL. In theory, winning football matches is nice and probably the whole point of the venture. In practice, the Giants and Bears are competing for a spot in next spring’s draft, so the loser here was actually the big winner. Again Mazel tov, Giants fans!

Would it be easier to savor this defeat without seeing the Bears coaches and players hovering on the sidelines, killing the clock with the rigged games they’ve been waiting to try for months? Sure. But focus: the only thing that matters now is the draft position. Glennon is almost done. Let the man do his job.

Verdict: The giants’ hard work will bear fruit in April.

The Jets (4-12) were leading by two points into the third quarter and still trailed 28-24 to Tampa Bay (12-4). The unusual departure of Buccaneers receiver Antonio Brown.

Given where the game stood in the third quarter, where the Jets led Tom Brady and the Super Bowl champions Buccaneers led by two goals, the endgame could be interpreted as being particularly painful for Jets fans. Previously, the Bucs acted like the typical behavior of the Jets, and the Jets acted provocatively, like the Bucs. What followed must have been an absurdist’s delight:

The Jets came so close to winning that they played well enough to scare Brady off and disappointed the Pirates’ offense so much that one of the top contributors was driven to mutiny. Then they smashed their lead just in time to secure their top five 2022 NFL Draft positions. Why ruin a perfect early January afternoon at MetLife Stadium with a victory?

For a Jets team that has just entered Game 12 of the season, the sentiment is paradoxically positive. They play hard. They are recovering. Rookie quarterbacks aren’t actively sabotaging things. And as readers of this space will remember, thanks to the Jamal Adams trade, the Seattle Seahawks first-round pick awaits them in April.

For weeks, Jets fans have been riding as hard as whoever plays Seattle, and today that effort requires rooting for the Detroit Lions (it’s not going too well). Rooting will be required for the Arizona Cardinals next week (a little more fun!).
