GM Extends Chevrolet Bolt Recall

General Motors said Friday it is expanding its recall process for Chevrolet Bolt electric cars that have been found to be at risk of fire due to rare manufacturing defects.

The company said it is recalling Bolts from model years from 2020 to 2022. An earlier recall involved 2017-2019 models.

GM said the move would cost the company $1 billion, on top of what it spent on previous Bolt recalls. It also said it would seek a refund from battery supplier LG Chem.

“GM customers can rely on our commitment to take the necessary steps to ensure the safety of these vehicles,” said Doug Parks, GM Vice President.

The recalled Bolts use battery packs made in South Korea by LG Chem, which has formed a joint venture with GM, which is building battery factories in Ohio and Tennessee, and expects to build others as the automaker launches new electric models.

GM and LG Chem attributed the fires to two manufacturing defects that occurred on rare occasions. As part of the recall, GM plans to replace defective battery modules.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
