Elena Mehlman, a 25-year-old graphic designer, said her group of five women exchanged gossip and jokes and fantasized about escapades. Then things got tense. “It’s disappointing,” he said. “I always wanted to have a girl clique. But Covid had other plans for us.”
Alex Levy, a yoga teacher and DJ based in Sacramento, is a member of several group chats, including one with hundreds of friends on Burning Man. But after a while, he said, the text chains “started to dwindle and disappear.”
“These things show a natural progression,” said Mr Levy, 28. “People start living their own lives and go their separate ways.” Appearing as smart and calm as a Jedi, he said it wouldn’t be natural to have a group chat that hasn’t lost this shine in a pandemic. “It’s rare for any group chat to sustain itself after two years,” he said.
