Helenius Wins Due to Kownacki’s Desperate Low Blows

Late in the 3rd round, Robert Helenius landed a right hand and a left fist that bent Adam Kownacki’s knees. The salvo was the latest in a series of combinations that Helenius used to open a clue on his scorecards and create lumps in his opponent’s face.

Polish-born and Brooklyn-raised Kownacki countered with the hardest punches of the fight—right and left, both under the belt.

Naturally, the shots were not counted. They got Kownacki a few minutes to rally and a harsh warning from the referee, but they didn’t change the rhythm of the fight. Undefeated before Helenius knocked him out in his first match in March 2020, Kownacki is a sound puncher who turned his exit down in hopes of tightening his defense.

It didn’t work out against Helenius, a 6-foot competitor from Finland. Helenius dropped punches, right hand and body punches, forcing referee Celestino Ruiz to consider stopping the fight in the 5th round.

In the middle of the sixth inning, another low blow provided the excuse. Ruiz stopped the fight. Helenius congratulated and Kownacki looked relieved.

As Deontay Wilder’s main training partner, Helenius is currently 31-3 with 19 knockouts.
