Former Raiders receiver Henry Ruggs III was charged Wednesday with four crimes and one misdemeanor for his role in an accident that killed a woman in Las Vegas last week.
Ruggs, 22, did not attend the hearing in Las Vegas Justice Court, where he was formally charged twice with causing death or serious harm from drunk driving. He was also charged with reckless driving twice, which is considered a felony in Nevada if it resulted in death or physical injury.
Clark County district attorney Steve Wolfson told reporters after the trial that the additional crime numbers were added due to the injury of his girlfriend, Kiara Washington, who was the passenger in Ruggs’ car.
Ruggs made no defense on Wednesday.
Each DUI count is punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of between $2,000 and $5,000. Each count of reckless driving is punishable by one to six years in prison and the same amount of fines. Wolfson’s office said that if Ruggs were convicted on DUI charges, he should face jail time and would not receive parole.
Ruggs was also charged with possession of a gun while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, a misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of six months in prison or a fine of up to $1,000 in Nevada, or both.
David Chesnoff, one of Ruggs’ attorneys, declined to accept questions from journalists after the trial, but urged the public not to prejudge the events in the case and “let them do their work in the courtroom.”
Police said the collision occurred around 3:40 am on November 2, when the sports car Ruggs was driving collided with an SUV. Police said the fire brigade was called to the scene and found 23-year-old Tina Tintor dead. in his vehicle. His dog was also killed. According to the district attorney’s office, Ruggs was traveling at 156 miles per hour. After appearing in court for the first time on November 3, Wolfson told reporters that Ruggs’ blood alcohol level was 0.16, or twice the Nevada legal limit.
The Raiders released Ruggs on November 2.
