It’s been a long time since Broadway last edited. Tony Awards ceremony.
Tonight, after a hiatus of 27 months, the event honoring Broadway’s best plays and musicals is back.
There will be lots of awards and lots of speeches in 25 competitive categories all this year.
But the impetus for the evening is a little different: to remind audiences that Broadway has reopened after an appallingly long pandemic shutdown, and hopefully a showcase of show tunes and emotions will entice audiences to return.
This year’s Tony Awards are live and in-person at the Winter Garden Theater on Broadway, starting at 7 p.m. in the East and scheduled to end at 11 p.m.
Most of the awards will be announced within the first two hours at a ceremony hosted by six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald. This segment is only viewable on the Paramount+ streaming service.
The second half of the evening will consist of a concert where the stars of the theater world will sing classical and contemporary show tunes. The event’s “The Tony Awards Present: Broadway’s Back!” episode, Leslie Odom Jr. It will be hosted by (Tony winner with “Hamilton”) and aired on CBS and will include three grand prizes for the best. musical, best game and best game animation.
The ceremony has been restricted in many ways as the coronavirus pandemic continues.
The red carpet is much shorter than usual. There is no official after-party. (The city denied a permit to keep one on the street.)
And in-person audiences will be limited – the Winter Garden hosts 1,500 people, compared to 6,000 at Radio City Music Hall, where the event has often been held in previous years. All participants are required to show proof of vaccination and wear masks throughout the event.
The awards ceremony will honor plays and musicals that opened during a shortened eligibility period due to the pandemic, from April 26, 2019 to February 19, 2020. Only 18 shows were eligible for the award—about half as many as usual—and only 15 points nomination.
