‘I’m Not For Everyone’: Jimmy Butler Developed With The Miami Heat

You recently broke LeBron James’ franchise record with your 10th triple-double in Miami. How has your overall game improved in Miami over the last few seasons?

I think it appeals more to the people I pass, because the guys who assist me – the guys who throw the ball forward for me, stare at me or create a great screen for me. to attack downhill. Most of my points come from here and then I break the glass, get on the scrimmage boards, my long boxing. Whenever they fight downstairs, I go up the hill and get the kickback.

I mean, all these triple-doubles definitely come from my teammates and they let me do that. But more than anything, as long as they’re geared towards winning, I might care less if I pass. [James’s record] or not. One thing I haven’t beaten him yet is the amount of championships he brings to this organization.

You’d rather have a game-winning assistant than a game-winning shot, right?

Yeah. I am no longer a striker. I’m more of a facilitating guard and I like it that way. I like it that way because we have a lot of guys who can send the ball to the rim, so I let them shine and just assisted.

At what moment does a teammate gain that confidence in your head that you know you can give him the ball when it matters most?

I think it’s built over time, but you see how much extra transition we’ve made, not just to someone else but me, to someone else, someone else they know, if you’re open, he’ll get the ball. So all over the game board, all over the locker room, all over the court, trust – knowing if you’re open, somehow, somehow the ball will get to you.
