Kamaru Usman Retains Title Belt in Covington Decision

Kamaru Usman defended the heavyweight title by unanimously defeating rival Colby Covington.

Usman knocked down Covington twice in the second round and was nearly finishing. But Covington bounced back and was competitive for the remainder of the game, keeping a high tempo, keeping Usman on the fence and also delivering solid punches and a header. It could be argued that this could be a split decision. Still, he also linked to the Usman attacks and effectively defended takedowns. He showed such a high performance that the referees prevented him from taking away his belt.

In the end, the two rivals shook hands, a gesture some might not have guessed after a year of idle talk and insults. Usman has now held the title five times and is close to potentially usurping Georges St-Pierre as the greatest middleweight of all time. Earlier this week, he said he wanted to face Saúl Álvarez in a boxing crossover match.
