Australia’s Kaylee McKeown won the 200m women’s backstroke by beating Canada’s Kylie Masse and Australia’s Emily Seebohm in 2 minutes 4.68 seconds.
Something was missing from this event: world record holder Regan Smith, who failed to qualify because he finished third in the US trials. It is a testament to American depth in this event and throughout the sport.
The two who beat him in June – Rhyan White and Phoebe Bacon – swam both sides of Seebohm, 29, who had the fastest time in qualifying, to take first place here for a medal. He had previously finished fifth in the 100 back.
(As for Smith, he finished his program and left Tokyo with a silver medal and a bronze medal.)
White, 21, had previously placed fourth in the 100-back. The 200 back was a single event for 18-year-old Bacon.
