Kristof Milak Wins Men’s 200-M Butterfly

Hungarian Kristof Milak did what he always did in the 200m butterfly: destroy the court in a race that was never in doubt.

World record holder Milak won the gold medal with a breathtaking time of 1:51.25, right after the world record of 1:50.73. This was a new Olympic record.

There was little competition at the Milak event. It was more than a full body and was two seconds ahead of Japanese Tomoru Honda who won the silver and three seconds ahead of Italian Federico Burdisso who won the bronze medal.

Michael Phelps has won this race in three of the last four Olympic Games. But Milak is the kind of swimmer who should have kept Phelps in retirement, and Wednesday’s win was the first of many Olympic medals in his career.
