‘Macbeth’ Actor Takes Stage After Testing Positive for Virus

Determined to keep going even as actors continue to test positive for the coronavirus, a new Broadway production of “Macbeth” came up with an unusual solution Thursday night: The director replaced an actor who was absent.

Director, Sam Gold, played a Scottish character named Lennox, as well as another role played by the same actor. He stepped in because the entire backup of the show was already on stage and filled in other missing actors.

Starring Daniel Craig and Ruth Negga, the production is scheduled to hit theaters on April 28, the deadline to qualify for this year’s Tony Awards. This will make “Macbeth” the last show to open this season.

However, the game faced serious coronavirus challenges during the preview period.

Just half an hour before the curtain went up on April 1, “Macbeth” had only three performances when a cast member tested positive for coronavirus. The show canceled that performance and the next day Craig also tested positive..

The show was closed for 11 days, Restarts on April 12. The house was sold on Thursday night. When another member of the cast tested positive, Gold stepped onto the stage to avoid having to send all those ticket holders home.

A similar rescue occurred last December in Keenan Scott II, author of “The Thoughts of a Man of Color.” stepped in to record a performance After several actors of this show tested positive for coronavirus.

“Macbeth” is Gold’s ninth production on Broadway in the past ten years. He won a Tony Award in 2015 as the director of the musical “Fun Home”.

“Macbeth” is also one of four productions forced to cancel their performances by the coronavirus this month. The play “Plaza Suite” continued its performances on Thursday (though one of its stars, Sarah Jessica Parker, remained on the air until Saturday); The new musical “A Strange Loop” had its delayed premiere that same night. The musical “Paradise Square” is still shuttered and plans to resume performances on April 19.
