Manchester United Drops Mason Greenwood After Abuse Charge

Manchester United has said it has suspended young forward Mason Greenwood and will ban him from playing or even training with teammates after he was accused by a woman of assaulting him on Sunday. The woman made the claim in a post that contained images, video and audio recordings from her personal social media account.

United released the first of two statements regarding Greenwood shortly after the woman’s post became a trending topic on social media. The club said in a statement that it was aware of the allegations against Greenwood but would not comment further until the facts became clear.

A few hours later, and after the woman’s allegations were removed from her account, the club issued a second statement announcing that they had temporarily suspended Greenwood, a 20-year-old graduate from United’s academy and one of the brightest young Brits. talent in the Premier League, the richest domestic football league in the world.

“Mason Greenwood will not return to practice or play games until further notice,” the team said.

on sunday evening, Manchester Police announced A statement that closely reflects the public accusations against Greenwood and the publicity swirl they caused earlier in the day, said they were informed of “online social media images and videos posted by a woman reporting incidents of physical violence.”

Police confirmed that “a man in his 20s was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault” and was detained for questioning. British police did not name the arrested man, in accordance with protocol.

Images accusing Greenwood of the assault were posted on Instagram Sunday morning, but soon disappeared along with other images from the woman’s account.

British and online media outlets reported on Sunday that police visited Greenwood’s home on Sunday.

Greenwood, who made his debut for United at the age of 17 and made his debut for the England national team a month before his 20th birthday last fall, has been a mainstay and a regular with United despite his faltering season. The start is ahead of a group of more experienced forwards on the club’s roster. Last week, United announced that French forward Anthony Martial, one of the players displaced by the appearance of Greenwood, is on loan to Seville, Spain for the remainder of the season.

Greenwood did not comment on the allegations on Sunday. One of its personal sponsors, Nike, said in a statement that it was “deeply concerned by the troubling allegations and will continue to monitor the situation closely.”
