NCAA president Mark Emmert said Tuesday he will step down from office next year, setting a timeline for the end of the reign, one of the most turbulent periods in college sports history.
In the statement made by the association, it was stated that Emmert left by “mutual agreement” with the Board of Directors meeting this week.
The board extended Emmert’s contract last year, which was extended until 2025 in a decision that has sparked widespread criticism in the college sports industry.
“With the important transitions going on in college sports, the timing of this decision provides the association with consistent leadership over the coming months, as well as an opportunity to consider what the president’s future role will be,” said John J. A former president of the University of Washington, Emmert has been at the top of the NCAA since 2010.
