Michigan vs Wisconsin Game Ends in Argument During Handshake

After defeating the Wisconsin team 77-63 on Sunday afternoon, Michigan Coach Juwan Howard slapped Wisconsin assistant coach Joe Krabbenhoft on the head at the post-game handshake line, causing a brawl between the two teams.

Former Miami Heat assistant coach and a member of Michigan’s famous Fab Five recruiting class in the early 1990s, Howard didn’t initially get into the handshake line, but then came late. Wisconsin Coach Greg Gard at first appeared to be using his left hand to grab Howard’s right elbow, and they were able to speak up to stop him.

Howard then tugs on Gard’s shirt, points his index finger at Gard’s face, and looks like he’s getting into a heated argument with Gard. As the coaches were separated by police officers, assistant coaches and players, Howard slapped Krabbenhoft on the head with his right hand. Players of both teams then started pushing and pushing each other.

Howard may be suspended and fined up to $10,000 for “no more than two competitions” under the Big Ten Conference’s Sportsmanship Policy, and Michigan or the conference’s Group Steering Committee may choose to impose additional penalties. Big Ten said in a statement that he was aware of the incident.

“The conference is in contact with both member institutions and is currently evaluating the event,” the statement said. “The conference will provide more information and will receive prompt and appropriate disciplinary action once it has completed its review.”

Gard said in a television interview that Howard was upset about the timeout that Gard called with 15 seconds left and Wisconsin 15 points ahead. Michigan was hitting the Wisconsin reserves when it called the timeout.

“Apparently, he didn’t like my calling for a timeout to reset the 10-second call,” Gard told CBS. “We only had four seconds to get the ball in the half and I didn’t want to put in my substitutes – all my substitutes were in the game – I didn’t want to put them in a shuffle position with just four seconds, so I took a break and gave us another 10 seconds and helped them get organized to get the ball. happened.”

He added: “He didn’t like it when he crossed the handshake line. I’ll leave it here and the tape will show the rest.”

Howard said he objected to Gard’s initiation of contact on the handshake line.

“Well, I basically told the head coach that I would remember that because of that timeout and I would remember someone touching me, and I think that was just so unnecessary – it was so unnecessary for him to touch me while we were speaking and communicating with each other. Howard told reporters. “So that’s what happened in the end. And that’s what escalated it.”

Johnny Davis won Purdue No. 5 and No. 5 for the conference title. He scored 25 points for #15 Wisconsin (21-5, 12-4 Big Ten) competing with 12 Illinois.

Michigan (14-11, 8-7) remains in the bubble for the NCAA tournament. The Wolverines moved up to 4th at the start of the season, but have not made the top 25 since the November 29 Associated Press poll.

A year ago, Michigan won the Big Ten regular season title and lost to UCLA in the 8th round of the NCAA tournament.
