Trevor Bauer of the Los Angeles Dodgers was suspended for two seasons, effective immediately, by Major League Baseball for violating the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy.
The suspension, which will cover 324 games for free, was announced Friday by Commissioner Rob Manfred. It came after an investigation by the League. allegation of sexually abusing a woman. “In the strongest possible terms, I reject any violation of the league’s domestic violence and sexual assault policy,” Bauer said in a statement. “I object to this action and expect it to prevail. As in this process, my representatives and I respect the confidentiality of the proceedings.”
In court filings and statements, one woman said she contacted Bauer and started a consensual relationship with hard sex, which was agreed upon in April 2021, but this led to non-consensual sexual acts. She also said that her hair was choking until she lost consciousness. She said she returned to Bauer’s home in Pasadena, California in May and formed a safe word to signal her desire to stop, but choked again until she lost consciousness and was punched.
Bauer’s lawyer had previously testified that his client had received messages indicating that he wanted the woman to be strangled and slapped during the encounters.
Separately, Washington Post published an investigation that uncovers another allegation of misconduct.
The Post’s report detailed how an Ohio woman sought a protective order against Bauer in 2020 after she accused Bauer of punching and strangling her during sex without her consent. According to this report, based on sealed court records and other documents, the woman dropped the request six weeks after she filed her application and after Bauer’s lawyers threatened legal action. Bauer called report He accused her of “a false narrative” and attempted extortion on the woman.
After a series of administrative leave extensions last season, his year officially ended on September 21, when the administrative leave is extended until the end of the season. He’s been paid for all of 2021 – his contract is set at $28 million – but will not be paid in 2022 or 2023, the final two years of his contract with Los Angeles, according to the terms of the suspension.
The Dodgers, with Bauer only playing in 17 games, issued a statement following the announcement that the team said it supported the league’s policy but would not comment further due to Bauer’s right of appeal.
“The Dodgers organization takes all allegations of this type very seriously and does not excuse or excuse any acts of domestic violence or sexual assault,” the statement said. “We have cooperated fully with MLB’s investigation since it began and fully support MLB’s Common Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy and the Commissioner’s implementation of the Policy.”
Bauer becomes the 15th player to be penalized as part of the league’s domestic violence, sexual assault and child abuse policy.
