Naomi Osaka, Andy Murray, and More Playing at the US Open

Looking for good matches on Monday, the first day of the US Open? Naomi Osaka will open the defense of the women’s title to lead the night session, and 2012 US Open champion Andy Murray will play Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third series in the afternoon.

Here are previews of these matches and a few others to consider (all times are Eastern and approximate except Aleppo and Osaka).

12th-placed Simona Halep withdrew from the West and South Open this month due to a tear in her right-hander. Two-time major champion Aleppo is a tough opponent in good health, but multiple injuries this year have kept him out of the French Open and Wimbledon.

Camila Giorgi, ranked 36th, is on the rise by winning her first Masters 1000 event at the National Bank Open in August. Giorgi has an aggressive base game that will put Aleppo on defensive ground and for both players a deep run at the US Open will be a fitting test of their ability.

ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM | 2 pm

Andy Murray, who won the US Open in 2012, has been battling injuries since 2018, touring intermittently between surgeries. Still, Murray was able to compete well enough and advanced to the third round at Wimbledon in July.

Third-placed Stefanos Tsitsipas was knocked out of Wimbledon in the first round after reaching the final at the French Open. His consistency is often questioned by veteran players, and on their first encounter, they will play a grind match against a three-time major tournament champion.

ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM | 7pm

Third seed Naomi Osaka won the US Open in 2018 and 2020 and will want to start her title defense with a convincing first-round victory. Osaka lost to eventual silver medalist Marketa Vondrousova in the third round of the Olympics. The disappointing result in Tokyo can certainly be left behind once New York’s fan-crowd returns.

Marie Bouzkova reached her second WTA final in February on Melbourne’s hard courts en route to the Australian Open. A 23-year-old Czech won the girls’ US Open title in 2014, but did not repeat that feat on the professional tour. A upset against Osaka would have been his biggest win.

ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM | 9 pm

Second-seeded Daniil Medvedev will face off against ATP Tour veteran Richard Gasquet to wrap up his night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Medvedev won the National Bank Open this month and is the favorite for the final on September 12. Gasquet has not made it past the third round of a major tournament since 2016, and it seems unlikely that Medvedev will be upset that he will repeat again or better. finals start from 2019.
