New Extreme Weather Record? not so fast

Jeff Masters, meteorologist and co-founder Air Underground, an online news service, says the reason no more temperature records are corrupted is that the process takes so much time. An example of this, he said, is the effort to reanalyze every Atlantic storm since 1851, which began twenty years ago. so far only reached 1965.

Dr. “There are hundreds of temperature records in the US alone that would not survive reanalysis,” Masters said. “The most famous of these was the record for the highest temperature in history, with 134 degrees Fahrenheit in Death Valley in 1913.”

Two extreme weather experts, William T. Reid and Christopher C. Burt, Discussed on Weather Underground The 1913 reading was “meteorologically unlikely”, in part because it was not consistent with other observations made in that section of Death Valley that same week. They say the man who recorded the temperature at Greenland Farm in California, in retrospect, “knowingly or unintentionally” exaggerated the reading and may not have been there at the time.

But Randall Cerveny, who leads the World Meteorological Organization’s efforts to research and verify global weather records, said the 1913 reading is still considered “the hottest temperature ever recorded for the United States and the world.”

D., who teaches geography at Arizona State University and worked with Mr. Burt to debunk the issue. Cerveny 1922 Libyan recorddescribed the research on the 1913 Death Valley recording by Mr Burt and Mr Reid as “not new, but hypothetical”. He added that the US Climate Extremes Index, a NOAA project, also chose not to research it.

“We do not dismiss records without substantial evidence proving their inaccuracy,” he said.

As for the more recent Death Valley recordings, Dr. Cerveny is still a part of WMO. 129.9-degree reading from that region on August 6, 2020.

If confirmed, it would be the third-highest temperature ever recorded on Earth and the second-highest in the United States. However, Dr. Cerveny said the investigation “took some time” as his team tested the temperature sensor that made the reading.
