NFL Gives Calvin Ridley 1 Year Suspension From Betting On The Games

Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for at least the entire 2022 season for gambling in NFL games last year, one of the harshest penalties of its kind in league history.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Monday that 27-year-old Ridley had been betting on NFL games during a five-day period in late November 2021, when he was away from the club to focus on mental health.

“The league has uncovered no evidence that any insider information has been used or that any game has been compromised in any way,” Goodell said in a statement. “There was also no evidence of any awareness of betting activity by coaches, staff, teammates or other players.”

Still, Goodell said “the integrity of the game” is fundamental to the league’s success and that Ridley put that integrity at risk.

Ridley announced that he would be leaving the team on October 31, 2021, due to a mental health issue.

“The past few weeks have been very tough and as much as I would love to compete with my teammates on the pitch, right now I need to get away from football and focus on my mental health,” Ridley said. He released a statement on his social media accounts. “This will help me be the best version of myself now and in the future.”

A four-year veteran, Ridley had his best NFL season in 2020 when he caught 90 passes for 1,374 yards. He played in only 5 games last season. The team exercised its fifth year option for the 2022 season last spring.

Şahinler said in a statement that they first learned of the league’s investigation on February 9 and “support the league’s findings and actions”.

Ridley may appeal the suspension within three days and request his reinstatement on or after February 15, 2023.
