NFL Quarterback 24-Year-Old Dwayne Haskins Dies After Car Hit

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin confirmed in a statement that 24-year-old Dwayne Haskins, the Pittsburgh Steelers backup quarterback and a former Ohio State star, died Saturday. Haskins agent Cedric Saunders told ESPN he died after being hit by a vehicle on a Florida highway.

“I am devastated and out of words by the unfortunate death of Dwayne Haskins,” Tomlin said in a statement. As soon as we arrived in Pittsburgh, the Steelers quickly became part of our family and one of our most hardworking employees, both on the field and in our community. Dwayne was a great teammate, but to many, he was an even greater friend. I’m really heartbroken.”

Haskins was the Washington Commanders first-round pick in 2019 and was selected 15th overall, after 4,831 yards and 50 touchdowns in his first year at Ohio State. In 2018, he took third place in Heisman Trophy voting, behind Alabama’s Tua Tagovailoa and Oklahoma’s Kyler Murray, after leading Ohio State to a 13-1 record, including a win against Washington at the Rose Bowl. it happened. He completed 70 percent of his passes that season and was expected to have an NFL future for his accuracy as a pocket setter at 6 feet-3.

But Haskins struggled through his first two seasons of the NFL, winning three of his 13 starts on Washington, with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, ranking in favor of Alex Smith. Commanders released him before the end of the 2020 season for his performance and multiple violations of Covid-19 protocols.

“He was a young man with an infectious personality, with a tremendous amount of potential,” Daniel and Tanya Snyder, co-owners of the Commanders, said in a statement.

The Steelers signed Haskins as a substitute in January 2021, but did not play the following season. In March, the Steelers re-signed him as a restricted free agent, and Haskins was expected to compete for the starting position with Mason Rudolf and Mitchell Trubisky at training camp. Haskins was training with his teammates in Florida this week.
