Nick Saban Answers Questions About Football and College Sports

We generate income in college. We have 21 sports – I don’t know how many hundred athletes we have on scholarships – and most of these sports are not generating income. However, income generating sports make it possible For all these sports to exist. We reinvest all resources, all income, reinvest in programs.

I hear people say “Well, you make a lot of money” all the time. Yes, but I create a lot of value.

There is more money to reinvest because income sports are doing very, very well, which helps all other sports and all the other opportunities that are created for all other sports. So when it comes to name, image and likeness, I have no problem with that.

You know, players are always allowed to work. They could do a summer job, they could make money. It’s getting less and less because the cost of attendance now gives them extra money and we’re allowed to pay for summer schools years ago where players didn’t get scholarships in the summer. Everyone chose to work, to earn money to have more money. But we didn’t have any other money; they only got room, board, tuition and books.

Their quality of life has improved to some extent. Name, picture and likeness a good thing for gamers – an opportunity to work, it’s no different. I guess I’ve been criticized for saying this, but opportunities also create some obstacles that maybe we haven’t had to deal with in the past, which won’t be the same for everyone.

Everything in college has always been the same scholarship, same cost of attendance, same benefits whatever it is, academic support or personal growth or whatever when you’re here. So it won’t be the same. Some guys will do more and have more opportunities than others. Some positions create more value than others, so how will this affect college football teams and their players?

We talked to our players about it, and they understood it. I coached in professional football so not everyone did the same thing in professional football, not everyone enjoyed the same benefits, not everyone had the same opportunities for turnover and that’s what I’ve tried to explain. But this is somewhat like that. I’m happy that players have the opportunity to do this.

So when you talk about what the red line is, I guess I can’t tell you what the red line is. I just know there’s a lot of money to go around, so in some ways the more we spend, the less you might be able to sport. So now there’s less opportunity for other people in sports because if you’re paying players, then it’s just too much money. So how many players can you pay out, which determines how many sports you can actually play?
