court 10 | 11 am

The 17th-placed Maria Sakkari reached the semi-finals of the French Open in June but has been battling on turf and hard surfaces ever since. Sakkari reached the last 16 at last year’s US Open, but here she faces a tough draw from the start.

19-year-old Marta Kostyuk boldly declared herself by making it to the round of 16 at the French Open, climbing up to a career-high 55th place in the world this month. It is quite capable of taking down opponents with good reliability and will provide a serious test for Sakkari on the faster surface of Flushing Meadows.

ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM | 3 pm

Ashleigh Barty, world no. 1 retired from the French Open in the second round and was supposed to skip prep turf tournaments in the early summer. He has since won 12 matches and taken his second major at Wimbledon along the way.

Vera Zvonareva is an old world no. The 2 haven’t made it past the second round of a major tournament since 2014, after a 2013 shoulder surgery required him to leave the round by multiple periods. Against Barty, Zvonareva’s experience is likely to be overshadowed by Barty’s current dominance.

ARTHUR ASHE STADIUM | 7pm

Novak Djokovic arrives at the US Open to complete the Grand Slam. After two defeats at the Olympics left him without a medal, Djokovic will recover and try to win the record-breaking 21st Grand Slam tournament. Djokovic started his campaign for the first time against the major elimination winner, Holger Rune. Even though the 145th Rune won the French Junior Open title in 2019, it’s unlikely to offer strong opposition to a 20-time major champion.

Louis Armstrong STADIUM | 9 pm

14th seed Alex de Minuar will face off against form-fighting American Taylor Fritz. Fritz has lost his last four games on hard courts, which is usually his favorite surface. De Minuar lost in his first round at Wimbledon in June and has only won one game since. As the duo try to restart their rise in the world rankings, the match will likely depend on mental strength rather than the physical aspects that strengthen their careers.

Court 4 | 6 pm

Jenson Brooksby and Mikael Ymer are two stunning young talents on the ATP Tour. Ymer, 22, has upset players like Gael Monfils and Hubert Hurckaz by making it to the third round of two major tournaments this year. Brooksby, a 20-year-old American, broke into the world’s top 100 after reaching the semi-finals by beating Frances Tiafoe and Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Citi Open. Both youngsters have aggressive base games that should create an exciting tennis whirlwind on the outside court.
