Number 1 with Billie Eilish, 21st-Century Pop Paragon, Big Vinyl

Billie Eilish a few years ago new model pop star – filling the internet with content, designing the product products themselves, and accumulating boatloads of fans via social media.

But in some ways the style of success is purely traditional. “happier than ever”, the seven-time Grammy winner’s second studio album, opens at #1 on the latest Billboard album chart with good streaming traffic but outstanding vinyl, CD and even cassette sales. It had 114 million streams – far surpassed by any other recent chart-topping. J. Cole, Olivia Rodrigo and Morgan Wallen, among others – but sold 153,000 copies as a complete package.

According to MRC Data, Billboard’s tracking arm, Eilish’s second #1 album, “Hppier Than Ever”, totaled the equivalent of 238,000 sales. It was beaten by Cole, Rodrigo, Wallen, and Taylor Swift, making it the fifth-best opening for an album this year.

Released in a number of boxed sets and retail-exclusive variants, “Hppier Than Ever” made 54 percent of its total sales in the US in physical formats, of which 73,000 vinyl LPs, 46,000 CDs and approximately 10,000 cassettes. It has had the second-highest weekly record sales since at least 1991, when SoundScan, the predecessor of MRC Data, first started keeping accurate data on music sales. (Only Swift’s recently released LP version of “Evermore” 102,000 copies After months of pre-ordering, there were more.)

How unusual is this? Well, last year the flow was made up 83 percent According to the Recording Industry Association of America, it’s only 9 percent of recorded music revenues and physical formats in the United States. But CD and LP sales are much more lucrative than streams and offer a huge chart boost. Indeed, “Happy than ever” would be #1 this week only on vinyl sales.
