Opening Ceremony Music Was From Video Games

Does some music during the parade of nations remind you of a climax battle you once fought, or perhaps a title screen you clicked a hundred times over?

You’re not mistaken: Athletes march around Tokyo Stadium to songs from video games that the organizers describe as “a quintessential piece of Japanese culture loved worldwide.” It featured songs from popular games such as Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, Sonic the Hedgehog, and the Final Fantasy series. All developed by video game studios in Japan.

Oddly enough, songs from Nintendo, Japan’s best-known video game studio, seem to be missing. No Zelda, no Mario, no Pokemon, despite being Japan’s then prime minister in Brazil five years ago turned into Mario, red hat and all, as part of the closing ceremony of the symbolic handover of the Summer Games from Rio de Janeiro to Tokyo.

For those who need a fix Mario and his friends, Nintendo, released a game called Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. in 2019. You can choose from 20 characters including Mario, Sonic the Hedgehog and Wario to play 30 sports.
