Sample Herb Profile: ALOE
Aloe is native to India and Africa and has more than 400 known species. The Egyptian Book of Remedies from 1500 BC mentions aloe. Alexander the Great fought for it, and even Greek physician Dioscorides wrote about it.
The useful parts of aloe are the gel and firm pulp inside the leaves, along with the bitter yellow aloe juice that forms between the green skin and the clear gel in mature plants.
This powerful plant is cathartic, anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, emollient, and even a laxative. It can soothe burns, skin infections, digestive issues, constipation, ulcers and gingivitis.
Aloe is difficult to preserve, so the best thing to do is grow it in your home to use whenever you need it. Don’t worry, it’s super hardy and nearly impossible to kill.
