Simone Manuel Failed to Make 50m Free Final

USA’s Simone Manuel failed to qualify for the 50m freestyle final after finishing 11 out of 16 swimmers with a time of 24.63 seconds in the semi-finals.

This was the only individual event for Manuel, who was shockingly unable to make it to the Olympics with 100 freestyles, his autograph, and where he won a gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

He announced that he had been diagnosed with overtraining syndrome earlier in the year, after the US team trials in June. Along with extreme fatigue, he was suffering from depression and insomnia and needed to step back from his normal, intense training routine.

He won the bronze medal early in the Tokyo meeting in the 4×100 freestyle relay. He was not part of this team in the qualifying rounds, but was added to the final to increase his medal chances.

Australian Emma McKeon took first place among the semi-finalists with an Olympic record of 24 seconds.
