Sue Bird and Eddy Alvarez Lead Team USA at Opening Ceremony

The United States Olympic team – some of them – entered the Olympic Stadium from behind. flag bearers, basketball player Sue Bird and baseball player Eddy Alvarez.

Bird and Alvarez were selected as flag bearers by their fellow Olympians. This is the first time each nation has been asked to nominate not one but two flag bearers. Each team was asked to name a male and a female.

This year’s U.S. delegation is one of the largest ever, with 613 athletes, including 193 returning Olympians, and stars like Kevin Durant. Katie Ledecky, Simone Manuel and Diana Taurasi.

However, the number of athletes walking parade of nations Friday is part of it. Some athletes, including members of the women’s soccer and gymnastics teams, are already in Tokyo and preparing for their events, while others have yet to arrive in Japan.

Athletes were encouraged to arrive in Tokyo five days before their race and were asked to leave two days after the race.

The football team playing New Zealand in nearby Saitama on Saturday sat but still walked – at their hotel.
