Members of the United States figure skating team will have to wait an unknown amount of time – perhaps a day or more – to claim their silver medals in the team event at the Beijing Games.
According to an official from USA Figure Skating, the ceremony was abruptly postponed shortly before it began Tuesday night, with no reason given to the figure skaters. The US ice skaters and ice dancers were wearing their Team USA outfits and were about to leave for the ceremony and when told to get back to them, the official said.
International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams described the delay as an “emerging problem”. at a press conference Wednesday. He said Olympic officials have consulted with lawyers and the International Skating Union, the sport’s global governing body, to resolve the issue.
“A situation has arisen shortly today that requires legal consultation with the ISU,” Adams said.
He added that the IOC will provide an update later on Wednesday, adding that the issue will “get clearer”.
The American team, led by three-time world champion Nathan Chen, finished second behind the Russian team, which dominated the event, which ended on Monday. The Russian team was led by its newest star, 15-year-old Kamila Valieva. He placed third in the Japan team competition.
It was the best finish ever in a team event for the United States, which has won bronze medals in the last two Olympics.
