On the contrary, “Beard After the Hour” is frankly weird. I love Coach Beard (played by Brendan Hunt, also one of the show’s writer-creators) as much as anyone. His charms, however, have always been that he is a bit on the sidelines, a sardonic observer whose lines are short but beautifully written and elegantly understated.
With virtually no involvement from the rest of the main cast, an entire episode focused on her – we’re getting some Mae and significant screen time for the AFC Richmond superfans played by Kevin Garry, Bronson Webb and Adam Colborne – to put it simply, a different television program. Not bad, but not what we expected after 18 episodes.
As always, there is a lot to like. Early “Moonrise Kingdom” joke tickled me almost beyond words. The exponential increase in pint is likewise a nice touch when Beard first hangs out with Richmond fans. And the moment Richmond fans visit the pitch on Nelson Road (to the tune of “We Are the Champions”, of course) is an amazing “Ted Lasso” moment, perhaps the best of the episode.
But the rest? You confused my mind. I’ll largely skip my usual scene-by-scene analysis because almost nothing in this episode seemed meaningfully related to anything else in the show. Beard’s scene in the hula hoop nightclub near the finale? If you can help me, please don’t hesitate.
As for “After Hours,” which was the semi-inspired part of the episode: When I first watched the movie when I was younger, I wasn’t a fan. Watching it again – I did it so I wouldn’t have to! – Still, I didn’t enjoy it much. (Although I did remind myself that the world is a remarkably better place when Teri Garr is a part of our public life.) However, at the core of the film is a long, reasonably intriguing exploration of male sexual anxiety.
