The Conservatory’s trial has begun.

Britney Spears’ conservatory hearing – the first case since July – has begun. The New York Times has reporters in the courtroom and will update as soon as it happens.

Fans started arriving more than an hour before her scheduled debut, but Ms Spears is not expected to be at the hearing presided over by Judge Brenda Penny at a downtown Los Angeles courthouse. Conservatively, Ms Spears was not required to attend ordinary case hearings in the long-running case, and she generally chose not to. He attended the hearing on June 23 when he spoke at length for the first time about conservatism, saying he was abusing him and asking it to end without a psychiatric evaluation. But even in this case it seemed from afar.

Unlike this hearing, where live audio from the courtroom is presented online to account for coronavirus protocols, today’s hearing will not be publicly available via streaming. (In addition to changing the Covid-19 measures, Judge Penny expressed dissatisfaction that Ms. Spears’ statement was shared online despite her orders against recording it.) A limited number of members of the public and press were allowed to attend in person.

Lawyers involved in the case – often in double digits thanks to the number of parties involved – can attend in person or remotely by video call or phone, as can clients, including the singer’s parents Lynne and James Spears.

Legal bills relating to the case are usually levied on Ms Spears’ property, although some of the lawyers involved in the case, including those of Ms. Spears’ father, have opposed her stated wishes. Representatives of the singer and her mother took the matter to court, saying that some of the fees were excessive.

Only one of the attorneys involved in the case, Ms. Spears’s court-appointed attorney, Samuel D. Ingham III, who was replaced in July, earned more than $3 million in the 13 years she represented herself. It is not known that Ms Spears questioned Mr Ingham’s wages.
