‘The Crown’, ‘The Mandalorian’ and Other TV Shows Have Big Days

After a year in which the pandemic has forced many Americans to increasingly turn to streaming video for entertainment, the Television Academy has largely awarded streaming services in its 73rd Emmy Awards nominations.

Netflix’s “The Crown” and Disney+ Star Wars action drama “The Mandalorian” led the way for three streaming series, with 24 nominations each. Disney+ Marvel series “WandaVisionHe had 23 nominations. The top three nominations were all debuts from streaming platforms.

HBO led all the networks with 130 nominations, with the help of one-year streaming service HBO Max. Netflix was right behind it with 129 nominations. Next was Disney+, which received 71 nominations in its second year of existence. NBC ranked fourth with 46 nominations.

The contestants in the best drama category are mostly from broadcasters. “They include the fourth season.Crown”; the second season of “The Mandalorian”; former best drama winner Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”; Netflix season oneBridgerton”; Amazon”men”; FX’s “Exposure”; HBO’s recently canceled series “Land of Lovecraft”; and NBC’s “This Is Us.”

In the comedy category, the Apple TV+ feel-good sports series “Ted Lasso” starring Jason Sudeikis earned a nomination and was the category-winning favourite. A couple joined the HBO Max original series: “Flight Attendant” and “Hacks.” Kaley Cuoco “Flight Attendant” and Jean Smart “Hacks” was each nominated for best actress in a comedy series. Other nominees in the comedy category included Hulu’s “PEN15” and three Netflix series: “Cobra Kai”, “Emily in Paris” and “The Kominsky Method”.

Only one nominee for best comedy—ABC’s “black-water”—was an all-time low from a cable or broadcast network.

While the streaming services have garnered numerous nominations over the past nine years, the big wins have been hard to come by.

How many times has a broadcaster won the award for best drama? That would be one and when it was accomplished four years ago “The Handmaid’s Tale” took the crown. Number of best comedy winners? Just two. And for the best limited series that has become arguably the most exciting category of the Emmys? Zero.

And Netflix – despite investing billions in content over the past few years and spending copious amounts of money on its Emmy campaign – has never won the award for drama, comedy, or best limited series, a dry spell that could end this year.

The ceremony will air on CBS on September 19 and will also be available on the Paramount+ streaming service.
